Applicable rules

1.     The default case of the subject and the predicate is Marfo^.

2.     The verb to be is not needed in Arabic. We don’t use is, are, was, were …etc in Arabic.

3.     The predicate comes after the subject

4.     Use rules 220, 230, 240 or rule 250 to convert the nouns and the adjectives from one form to another based on count and gender.

5.     Use rule 280, 285 to check if Surf is forbidden. Tanwin of a noun is forbidden if the noun has Alif-Lam or if the Surf is forbidden.

6.     Use rule 290 to use the appropriate marks. We would use the Marfo^ form for both the subject and the predicate.

Pronouns and Possessions

Homework:

Click to download the homework Sheet: PDF or MS Word.

Notes:

Download and print the Arabic book 4th Edition in pdf format or MS Word  format

The procedure

They2F are fast. The root for fast is (سَرِيعٌ). The root is always 1M 3rd person.

Step 1: Use rule 230 to convert the noun into the appropriate form. For example, rule 230 will tell you how to convert the root (سَرِيعٌ) into a duel female noun third person (سَرِيعَتَانِ). You add female Ta’a followed by Alif-Noon.

Step 2: Use Rule 610 to select the appropriate pronoun. For example, for a duel female third person, the pronoun (هُمَا) is found in row 13, column 3, i.e. Rule 610- (R12,C3).

Step 3: Check Surf, rule 280, 285. No need to check Surf for 2M, 2F, 3+M or words that start with Alif-Lam. If the word starts with Alif-Lam, then no Tanween is allowed. Check rule 530 for the restrictions on noun sentences regarding Alif-Lam and Tanween. The word سَرِيعَتَانِ is duel so no need to check Surf. But the word سَرِيع we need to check it against rule 280, we find that Surf is allowed for the word سَرِيعٌ.

Step 4: Check the Irab of the noun. According to rule 530, the Khabar is Marfoo^. In the example above, the word “سَرِيعٌ fast” is Khabar, and Khabar is Marfoo^.

Step 5: Go to table 285 to find out in (4,4) that the marfoo^ for duel nouns has Alif -Noon not Ya’a-noon, i.e. سَرِيعَتَانِ not سَرِيعَتَينِ.

. Step 6: Assemble the words together to get a noun sentence. (هُمَا سَرِيعَتَانِ)

Rule (610): Pronouns and possessions based on count, gender and category.
